About Daisy

Daisy Lomelí is a math teacher, mother, and advocate who has dedicated her life to supporting local youth and under served communities across Los Angeles County.

Daisy Lomelí is a daughter of hard-working immigrants, Juan and Rosa, who raised her and her siblings with principles of integrity, humility, and community.

She is a proud product of Southeast and East LA K-12 schools. She attended Teresa Hughes Elementary School, Griffith Magnet Middle School, and Bell High School before attending UC Riverside as a first-generation college student.

Some of the most impactful experiences in college led Daisy to major in Sociology with a minor in Labor Studies. In her third year as an undergraduate student, she became the Southern California Regional Coordinator for United Students Against Sweatshops and was a student intern for the UC campus workers’ local union. Through these opportunities, she was able to develop skills useful for worker organizing and ultimately found her passion in educating the community.

In addition, through her coursework, and as a full-time tutor while attending UCR, she realized the power of mentoring youth and providing access to opportunities that she was only able to have throughout her transformative educational journey.  It only made sense that Daisy would pursue a career as a Math Teacher to empower students to realize their full potential and improve their quality of life. She went on to receive her Single Subject Teaching Credential in Mathematics from the University of Redlands. Since then, she has served at four different high schools and was nominated for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching in 2019. Moreover, her participation in the Xicanx Institute for Teaching and Organizing and the Institute for Teachers of Color Committed to Racial Justice along with her membership in the Association of Raza Educators has deeply shaped her work as an educator. Daisy is now in her twelfth year of teaching and continues to follow her passion of integrating humanizing pedagogies with math curriculum and is a strong supporter of Ethnic Studies for all stakeholders.

Daisy lives in the same home she grew up in on Live Oak Street where she is raising her son Isandro and daughter Quetzali alongside her partner Esteban. As a devoted mother, dedicated teacher in Southeast LA, and lifelong Cudahy resident, she deeply understands the value of community. Serving as the Cudahy’s Councilmember for the past four years has been a true honor. During this time, she and her colleagues successfully established youth sports leagues, provided scholarships, created youth leadership and mentorship opportunities, and expanded both youth and senior excursions.

Daisy’s key achievements as a Councilmember include:

  • enacting ordinances to protect renters

  • making our city budget process more transparent

  • fostering economic growth

  • improving street cleanliness

  • supporting growing families

Daisy is committed to continuing this progress by expanding the city’s programs, renovating community parks, enhancing safety initiatives, ensuring clean and secure routes to schools, and creating additional leadership opportunities for youth to encourage them to be civically engaged. Daisy Lomeli’s goal is to improve the quality of life for all Cudahy residents.
